The Fear Of The Lord 4

Proverbs 19:23: The fear of the LORD tendeth to life: and he that hath it shall abide satisfied; he shall not be visited with evil.

Whatever the fear of the Lord is, it provides many wonderful things for us in addition to a satisfying life. My personal definition is faith in God. What believers need to fear are God*s chastening and the sin the brings it. We should let the Bible define it for us.

1 John 4:18: There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.

Job 28:28: And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.

Psalms 19:9: The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether. 111:10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever.

Proverbs 1:7: The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction. 2:5 Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God. The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate. The fear of the LORD prolongeth days: but the years of the wicked shall be shortened. 14:26 In the fear of the LORD is strong confidence: and his children shall have a place of refuge. 27 The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death. 15:16 Better is little with the fear of the LORD than great treasure and trouble therewith. 33 The fear of the LORD is the instruction of wisdom; and before honour is humility. 16:6 By mercy and truth iniquity is purged: and by the fear of the LORD men depart from evil. 22:4 By humility and the fear of the LORD are riches, and honour, and life. 23:17 Let not thine heart envy sinners: but be thou in the fear of the LORD all the day long.

Isaiah 11:2: And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD; 3 And shall make him of quick understanding in the fear of the LORD: and he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of his ears: 33:6 And wisdom and knowledge shall be the stability of thy times, and strength of salvation: the fear of the LORD is his treasure.

Acts 9:31: Then had the churches rest throughout all Judaea and Galilee and Samaria, and were edified; and walking in the fear of the Lord, and in the comfort of the Holy Ghost, were multiplied.

Matthew Henry on Proverbs 19:23 above: See what men get by living in the fear of God, and always making conscience of their duty to him.

1. Safety: They shall not be visited with evil; they may be visited with sickness or other afflictions, but there shall be no evil in them, nothing to hurt them, because nothing to separate them from the love of God, or hurt to the soul.

2. Satisfaction: They shall abide satisfied; they shall have those comforts which are satisfying, and shall have a constant contentment and complacency in them. It is a satisfaction which will abide, whereas all the satisfactions of sense are transient and soon gone. He shall not go supperless to bed; he shall have that which will make him easy and be an entertainment to him in his silent and solitary hours.

3. True and complete happiness. Serious godliness has a direct tendency to life; to all good, to eternal life; it is the sure and ready way to it; there is something in the nature of it fitting men for heaven and so leading them to it.
